Like many other people, I have wanted to hang a laptop on my wall for quite some time now. Well, this dream recently became a reality! After inheriting an old laptop with a high-quality screen, I went to work.
After pulling everything apart, I had to go out and find a frame to put it allll in.
Clearly it was going to be running Linux, which also had to be installed. I chose to use Slackware because I have never used it before, but from what I have seen it's pretty slick.
Slackware IS pretty slick and installed with out any trouble. Installing the software was a little more annoying (I couldn't find a Slackware package for Feh and I had to install a couple libs (libsasl and libldap) before mount.smb would go), but nothing out of the ordinary.
For the curious, the images are stored on my server. The frame mounts the smb share, then uses feh to play a slide show. I've disabled DPMS off in xorg.conf (so the screen will stay on), then turn the screen on and off with xset dpms force (off|on) to save power over night.
