SyncBack Windows Backup
Posted by David Wole on 2007-04-30 [edit | view only]

SyncBack is a great, free, Windows file backup utility. It's easy to use and makes you feel good.
(note that this is not a full disk backup utility. For full disk backup, I have found Acronis True Image to be the best for single computer backup (yes, better than Norton Ghost))

Roomba Cockfight
Posted by David Wole on 2006-04-02 [edit | view only]

"Who doesn't love a robotic vacuum cleaner cockfight? I know they're illegal in most states, but luckily California isn't one of them. Sure, there are liberals who say it's abuse to whip a Roomba into a frenzy, tape a pair of sharp scissors on its back and set it loose in the ring. But screw those bleeding hearts. Roombas, the saucer-shaped, floor-sweeping robots from iRobot, love to fight. It's in their nature."

Pop VS Soda
Posted by David Wole on 2006-03-16 [edit | view only]

Using the World Wide Web to gather and process data from across English-speaking North America, I intend to plot the regional variations in the use of the terms "Pop" and "Soda" to describe carbonated soft drinks.
But, as we all know, the only real name for it is pop.

Benford's Law
Posted by David Wole on 2006-02-06 [edit | view only]

A growing number of statisticians, accountants and mathematicians are convinced that an astonishing mathematical theorem known as Benford's Law is a powerful and relatively simple tool for pointing suspicion at frauds, embezzlers, tax evaders, sloppy accountants and even computer bugs.

You would like to install Linux/BSD Os but windows partition is taking up your whole hard disk space. Or you don't want to pay money to resize hard disk partition (tools like partition magic costs money). Not to worry you can resize partition with KNOPPIX Live Linux CD.

Webcam Jigsaw Solver in 200 Lines of Python
Posted by David Wole on 2005-03-02 [edit | view only]

A Glyphsaw Puzzle is a computer assisted jigsaw puzzle game using real cardboard pieces. At any time, one may hold a puzzle piece up to a camera, and the computer will show exactly where in the puzzle the piece belongs.
All this, done in only two hundred (thats right, two hundred) lines of Python!

The Graphing Calculator Story
Posted by David Wole on 2005-02-08 [edit | view only]

I used to be a contractor for Apple, working on a secret project. Unfortunately, the computer we were building never saw the light of day. The project was so plagued by politics and ego that when the engineers requested technical oversight, our manager hired a psychologist instead. In August 1993, the project was canceled. A year of my work evaporated, my contract ended, and I was unemployed. There is also a video of Ron telling the story at Google Video.

SF Writers Sting Supposedly Traditional Publisher
Posted by David Wole on 2005-02-06 [edit | view only]

A group of SF writers all submitted purposely awful stories to a publisher that purported to publish only selected high quality works. They created the worst story they could come up with, and it was accepted for publication.

Squirt Gun Offenses
Posted by David Wole on 2005-02-03 [edit | view only]

While attending a not-so-recent computer conference I stayed at a rather interesting hotel in San Francisco's tenderloin district. The hotel provided an adequate coffee and donut breakfast each morning. I came into the eating room one morning, grabbed a jelly-filled, a cup of coffee and had a seat. Across from me was a well-dressed man munching happily. Before we could start a conversation, the hotel manager walked up to him and stated "Sir.. these donuts are for guests only."

Curse Words in the Windows 2000 Source Code
Posted by David Wole on 2005-02-01 [edit | view only]

In the struggle to meet deadlines, I think pretty much all programmers have put in comments they might later regret, including swearwords and acerbic comments about other code or requirements. Also, any conscientious coder will put in prominent comments warning others about the trickier parts of the code... WARNING - Lots of bad words!

Running Windows viruses under Linux
Posted by David Wole on 2005-01-30 [edit | view only]

Linux just isn't user-friendly when it comes to viruses. You have to work to find and run them. It doesn't happen automatically as it does with Windows. The GNU/Linux folks really should improve this glaring discrepancy.

Monkeys Pay to See Female Monkey Bottoms
Posted by David Wole on 2005-01-29 [edit | view only]

A new study found that male monkeys will give up their juice rewards in order to ogle pictures of female monkey's bottoms. The way the experiment was set up, the act is akin to paying for the images, the researchers say.

Sex in High School Involves Long Chains of Relationships
Posted by David Wole on 2005-01-29 [edit | view only]

A study of sexual and romantic relations at a high school found students connected by long chains, rather than in a tight network with a core group of a promiscuous few.
